Il dr. Will Caster è uno dei più brillanti studiosi nel campo dell'intelligenza artificiale, al momento al lavoro su PINN, un sistema altamente avanzato di computer con autocoscienza basato sul cervello di scimmie usate come cavie. Quando un attentato portato da una frangia terroristica che mira a bloccare lo sviluppo di simili tecnologie lo condanna a morte la moglie, anch'essa studiosa, decide di sottoporre la sua mente al medesimo procedimento operato sul cervello della scimmia e caricarla dentro PINN per vedere se la sua mente possa continuare a viva usando i computer al posto della materia grigia. L'esperimento ha successo al di là di ogni aspettativa e la mente di Will Caster non solo vive ma acquista rapidità e potenza di calcolo contaminandosi con i computer e avendo accesso ad internet arriva ovunque cominciando a pianificare la propria sopravvivenza e il proprio potenziamento. Dans un futur proche, un groupe de scientifiques tente de concevoir le premier ordinateur doté d’une conscience et capable de réfléchir de manière autonome. Ils doivent faire face aux attaques de terroristes anti-technologies qui voient dans ce projet une menace pour l’espèce humaine. Lorsque le scientifique à la tête du projet est assassiné, sa femme se sert de l’avancée de ses travaux pour « transcender » l’esprit de son mari dans le premier super ordinateur de l’histoire.
