Riggan Thompson è una star che ha raggiunto il successo planetario nel ruolo di Birdman, supereroe alato e mascherato. Nell'impresa vengono coinvolti la figlia ribelle Sam, appena uscita dal centro di disintossicazione, l'amante Laura, l'amico produttore Jake, un'attrice il cui sogno di bambina era calcare il palcoscenico a Broadway, un attore di grande talento ma di pessimo carattere.
