Nella Virginia segregazionista degli anni Sessanta, la legge non permette ai neri di vivere insieme ai bianchi. Uffici, toilette, mense, sale d'attesa, bus sono rigorosamente separati. Da una parte ci sono i bianchi, dall'altra ci sono i neri. La NASA, a Langley, non fa eccezione. I neri hanno i loro bagni, relegati in un'aerea dell'edificio lontano da tutto, bevono il loro caffè, sono considerati una forza lavoro flessibile di cui disporre a piacimento e sono disprezzati più o meno sottilmente. Reclutate dalla prestigiosa istituzione, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan e Mary Jackson sono la brillante variabile che permette alla NASA di inviare un uomo in orbita e poi sulla Luna. Matematica, supervisore (senza esserlo ufficialmente) di un team di 'calcolatrici' afroamericane e aspirante ingegnere, si battono contro le discriminazioni (sono donne e sono nere), imponendosi poco a poco sull'arroganza di colleghi e superiori. Confinate nell'ala ovest dell'edificio, finiscono per abbattere le barriere razziali con grazia e competenza. La qualità più grande del film di Theodore Melfi è quella di sfogliare una pagina sconosciuta della NASA. Pagina 'bianca' coniugata fino ad oggi al maschile. Se la storia, il contributo delle scienziate afroamericane alla conquista dello spazio, è una novità, la maniera di raccontarla è convenzionale ma non per questo meno appassionante.(my movies.it)
