Bones vive con la madre Billy, vedova squattrinata, e il fratellino in una casa fatiscente che sta per essere riappropriata dalla banca locale. Il nuovo dirigente di filiale propone a Billy di esibirsi in un locale sadomaso per estinguere il suo debito e la donna accetta, contro il volere del figlio maggiore. Il ragazzo ha anche altri problemi: il bullo locale, che per non sbagliarsi si chiama Bully, lo cerca per fargliela pagare, promettendogli una decapitazione sommaria. Infine la vicina di casa di Bones, Rat, vive con una nonna ex star del cinema e alleva un ratto (di qui il suo soprannome) come fosse un criceto.
