In seguito a un passato misterioso e turbolento, Lucinda detta 'Luce' viene segregata a Sword and Cross, università e istituto correttivo insieme. Vincendo la diffidenza generale, Luce trova un'amica in Penn, ma ben presto attira le attenzioni di due ragazzi: il teddy boy maledetto Cam e il biondo Daniel, che sembra voler allontanare Luce pur essendone attratto.
