Owen Suskind was a boy of considerable promise, until he developed autism at the age of 3. As Owen withdrew into his silent state, his parents almost lost hope that he find some way to interact with his world in some meaningful way. However, that way was found through animated films, especially those of the Walt Disney Company, which provided Owen a way to understand the world through its stories to the point of creating his own. This film covers the life of Owen and how he manages to become as functional as possible with the help of Disney and his family to the point of having his own a life. However, Owen soon learns as well that there is more to real life than what Disney can illustrate in animation even as his family prepares itself for an uncertain future with him. All'età di tre anni, Owen Suskind, anziché progredire col naturale sviluppo delle abilità motorie e cognitive, cominciò a subire una sorta di regressione, smise di parlare, se non attraverso un borbottio continuo e incomprensibile, e si chiuse sempre più in se stesso, con la sola compagnia dei classici Disney, fino a rendersi del tutto irraggiungibile dai suoi stessi genitori. La diagnosi di autismo, che dopo un tour di specialisti venne appuntata definitivamente al caso di Owen, gettò la famiglia nella disperazione, finché un giorno, il padre non si accorse che c'era un modo di comunicare col piccolo, parlando il linguaggio dei personaggi dei film.

Si apre così una breccia nel muro fatto di una sostanza sconosciuta ma apparentemente inscalfibile che relega Owen fuori dalla società e da una prospettiva di futuro. Appare sempre più chiaro che, conoscendo ogni battuta a memoria, il ragazzo è in grado di utilizzare i film d'animazione e le avventure che interessano i loro personaggi per orientarsi nei fatti della vita e dare un nome alle proprie emozioni.(my movies.it)
