Cody ha otto anni, ha perso la mamma a tre ed è stato affidato a una coppia che, secondo l'assistente sociale, si è rivelata poco adatta. Una successiva coppia addirittura lo ha abbandonato senza spiegazioni. Desiderosi di riavere un figlio dopo averne perso uno in circostanze drammatiche, Jessie e Mark lo prendono in affidamento sperando di ricostruire la loro vita e di riassestare il loro rapporto di coppia. Il primo approccio è ottimo: Cody è un bambino educato, gentile e affettuoso. Ha però un problema: ha paura di dormire e perciò prende stimolanti per stare sveglio. Il motivo è che ritiene che, nel sonno, arrivi l'Uomo Cancro, un mostro che ha mangiato sua mamma. Jessie lo tranquillizza, ma presto cominciano ad accadere cose strane, a partire da una curiosa invasione serale di farfalle (Cody è appassionato di farfalle). Più inquietante è l'apparizione notturna di quello che Jessie identifica come Sean, il figlio morto, ritenendo che sia arrabbiato perché l'hanno sostituito con Cody. Al gruppo di sostegno psicologico, spiegano a Jessie che si tratta di un sogno a occhi aperti, non di una cosa reale, ma la sera dopo Sean ricompare, in piena vista, e anche Mark lo vede. Subito però, come le farfalle, scompare. Compare invece Cody per scusarsi, ma come può avere un ruolo in quello che è successo?
