In a dystopian near future, humanity has been ravaged by a mysterious fungal disease. The afflicted are robbed of all free will and turned into flesh-eating 'hungries'. Humankind's only hope is a small group of hybrid children who crave human flesh but retain the ability to think and feel. The children go to school at an army base in rural Britain, where they're subjected to cruel experiments by Dr. Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close). School teacher Helen Justineau (Gemma Arterton) grows particularly close to an exceptional girl named Melanie (Sennia Nanua), thus forming a special bond. But when the base is invaded, the trio escape with the assistance of Sgt. Eddie Parks (Paddy Considine) and embark on a perilous journey of survival, during which Melanie must come to terms with who she is.

In una base militare inglese viene tenuto prigioniero un gruppo di ragazzini dalle caratteristiche particolari. Mentre all'esterno della base stessa l'umanità è affetta da un'epidemia dilagante che trasforma gli esseri umani in zombie, loro hanno un forte stimolo a nutrirsi di carne umana ma hanno conservato dei sentimenti che gli altri hanno totalmente perso. Costituiscono quindi un prezioso elemento per tentare di realizzare un vaccino. Tra loro si distingue la piccola Melanie, dall'intelligenza brillante e dalla intensa sensibilità, la quale ha instaurato un rapporto speciale con l'insegnante Miss Justiniau. En un futuro distópico la humanidad se ha visto asolada casi en su totalidad por un tipo de hongo que contiene un virus "zombie". Un petit groupe d’enfants, immunisés contre un terrible virus qui risque de décimer l’humanité, est détenu dans un camp militaire. Bien qu’ils se nourrissent eux aussi de viande humaine, les enfants sont encore capables d’éprouver des sentiments. Ils sont donc essentiels à la recherche menée par docteur Caldwell, biologiste, pour trouver un vaccin capable de sauver l’espèce humaine. Parmi les enfants, une petite fille, Melanie, sort du lot: dotée d’un esprit brillant, elle est très liée à la maîtresse, Miss Justiniau. Il professor Brenner è un docente dell'università di New York, stimato dai colleghi, rispettato dagli studenti e amato dalla moglie, sempre gratificata da un suo pensiero gentile. On the Franco-Austrian Frontier during WW I, an oriental priest, chaplain of a French colonial regiment, is condemned to life imprisonment because he possesses the power of turning men into zombies. As the priest,in his prison cell, is preparing to burn the parchment containing the location of the secret formula, Colonel Mazovia kills the priest and takes the partially-burned parchment. Fade to after the war to an expedition of representatives from all the Allied countries (only those with colonial interests it appears) being sent to Cambodia to find and destroy forever the Secret of the Zombies. The group includes Colonel Mazovia (somewhat akin to sending the fox to guard the hen house); a student of dead languages, Armand Louque; Englishman Clifford Grayson; and General Duval and his daughter Claire. Armand falls in love with Claire, who accepts his proposal of marriage in order to spite Clifford whom she really loves. Later, when Claire, following an accident, runs to Cliff for comfort, Armand breaks the engagement, leaving her free to marry Cliff. Further accidents, caused by Mazovia, results in the natives refusing to work and the expedition returns to Pnom Penh. Armand fins a clue which he had overlooked before and returns to Angkor against orders. After viewing an ancient ceremony at the temple, Armand follows one of the servants of the high priest out of the temple, through a swamp, to a bronze doorway. When the servant leaves, Armand goes through the door to a room paneled in bronze, with an idol holding a gong in one hand in the middle of the room. He accidentally strikes the gong, and a panel in the wall opens revealing a small metal tablet. He translates the inscription and realizes that it is the secret for which they have all been looking. He alone now has the power to make zombies out of people, beginning with a practice run on his servant before taking up that little matter of the fickle Claire. Armand is not one to be trifled with. L'isola degli zombies (White Zombie) costituisce il primo autentico zombie-movie, progenitore di decine di film realizzati negli anni successivi (da Tourneur a Romero), realizzato già nel lontano 1932 dai fratelli Halperin (Victor regista, Edward produttore). Il film è ambientato ad Haiti, tra bambole voodoo e potenti magie nere, dove un superbo Bela Lugosi è il negromante Murder Legendre, un satanico individuo che schiavizza zombie utilizzandoli come manodopera nelle raffinerie di zucchero. In quegli anni, infatti, lo zombie appare soprattutto l'essere privato della propria anima che si distingue per l'andatura rigida e lo sguardo fisso, lontano dai mostri antropofagi nei quali ci si imbatterà in seguito, corpi umani privati della volontà e resi simili ad automi da pratiche stregonesche nella migliore tradizione della macumba caraibica. Nel film di Halperin, un vero "incubo a occhi aperti", gli zombie sono schiavi di colore costretti a lavorare nella piantagione anche dopo morti, metafora scoperta di un capitalismo aggressivo e feroce.(my movies.it)
