I mitici fumetti della Marvel affrontano per la prima volta il grande schermo. I mutanti Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm ed altri, con alla guida il Professor X, combattono contro la sete di potere di Magneto e dei suoi. Dopo il fulminante I soliti sospetti e l'interessante ma non sconvolgente L'allievo, Bryan Singer vede finalmente il colore (abbondante) dei soldi di una megaproduzione. La domanda legittima avrebbe potuto essere: avrà venduto l'anima al diavolo (la cui presenza torna in tutti i suoi film)? La risposta è no. Pur maneggiando effetti speciali ad alto tasso di spettacolarità non rinuncia a proseguire un proprio percorso di autore. Eccolo allora lavorare ancora sull'ambiguità, sulla difficoltà di distinguere il Bene dal Male. La mutazione non diventa occasione di dibattito ma resta elemento per 'fare cinema' in un film in cui l'umanità sta sullo sfondo e lo scontro si svolge tra esseri che hanno delle potenzialità che ai 'normali' fanno solo paura (my movies.it)

1944, dans un camp de concentration. Séparé par la force de ses parents, le jeune Erik Magnus Lehnsherr se découvre d'étranges pouvoirs sous le coup de la colère : il peut contrôler les métaux. Puissant télépathe, le professeur Charles Xavier dirige une école destinée à recueillir ces êtres différents, souvent rejetés par les humains, et accueille un nouveau venu solitaire au passé mystérieux : Logan, alias Wolverine. Based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, X-MEN takes place in the near future, as certain humans are evolving into mutants with special powers. In the Canadian wilderness, a young runaway mutant named Rogue (Anna Paquin) and a bad-tempered, quick-healing mutant with retractable metal claws called Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) are suddenly attacked by Sabertooth, one of Magneto's (Ian McKellen) powerful lackeys. Fortunately, Cyclops (James Marsden) and Storm (Halle Berry), students of the compassionate Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), interfere and bring them back to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Here Wolverine and Rogue learn more about the conflict between Xavier and the militant Magneto, who wants to power a device that will genetically alter humans, with possibly deadly results. Only Xavier's students can stop Magneto's plans. Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) displays his expertise with an ensemble cast, accomplishing a feat by making the first live-action film about an entire group of superheroes. Hugh Jackman's portrayal of the ill-tempered Wolverine is dead-on, while Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are ideally matched in their Martin Luther King, Jr.- and Malcolm X-like roles. Smart and well-paced, X-MEN towers above most comic book movies.(movieweb.com)
